Close to 200 children study in grades 1–10 at a school founded for families living below the poverty line.
Farooqabad is a fairly large town in the Sheikhupura District, home to people at every economic level, from the very wealthy to the very poor. The Farooqabad School was founded to meet the needs of families and children living below the poverty line who cannot afford to send their children to school.
The parents and guardians of most of the children at the school work as domestic helpers, as day labourers who work whenever work can be found, at brick kilns, as farmhands for landowners and in other low-paid jobs. Many buckle under the weight of enormous debts after borrowing to meet family needs, and are forced to work in unacceptable conditions.
The only way out of these hard circumstances, for the generations to come, is to gain a formal education and a good job. If parents and guardians had to cover the cost of their children's education alone, they would rather send them out to work. They are willing to send their children to school as long as it does not burden an income that is already stretched thin. The Farooqabad School is a great blessing to the close to 200 children who study there in grades 1–10.
