The Gujranwala School, in one of Pakistan's largest cities, is located in an area surrounded by communities where the majority of families live below the poverty line. Generation after generation, these families have been trapped in low-paid work.
Most parents and guardians work as cleaners and street sweepers across the city, at brick kilns, and in any job that brings in some income. Like parents everywhere they long to send their children to school and want them to be educated, but for lack of money many families choose to send their children out to work instead.
The Gujranwala School has made it possible even for these desperately poor families to send their children to school. It serves around 200 children, and their families are deeply grateful that their children have a school that cares for them.
